Description: The light and impressive Godfrey Pilkington Art Gallery is a
dedicated space for all St.Helens’ cultural community. Located in
the fine Victorian building known as the Gamble Building in the
heart of the town centre, the gallery is owned by St.Helens Council,
kindly supported by the Rainford Trust and run in consultation with
The Godfrey Pilkington Art Gallery Steering Group.
Throughout the year, the gallery showcases a varied and engaging
programme of visual art exhibitions, designed to provide interest for
all visitors, chiefly supporting local and regional visual artists and
makers, art groups and clubs, schools and colleges.
On 3 July 2007, the town’s existing community Art Gallery was
officially renamed and relaunched as The Godfrey Pilkington Art
Gallery in recognition of the generous and continued support of the
Rainford Trust and, in particular, in honour of one of the Trustees,
the late Mr. Godfrey Pilkington.
Godfrey was a founding Trustee of the Rainford Trust, (the Pilkington
Glass family charity) and a long-term enthusiastic supporter of the
visual arts in St.Helens. He was a judge at the inaugural and
subsequent St.Helens national Open Art Competitions from 1995-
97, and encouraged accomplished and well-known artists such as
Antony Gormley OBE, and Anthony Green, Trustee of the Royal
Academy, to become members of the judging panel. A local, now
escalating, Open Art Competition restarted in 2004 and Godfrey
again played a key role as Chairman of the judges from 2004-06.
The diverse and stimulating array of art and craft works exhibited
throughout the year in the gallery attest Godfrey's contributions to
the town, ensuring that his enthusiasm and commitment to the visual
arts continue to be celebrated.
We hope you enjoy your visit.
